FIRST VISIT
WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR INITIAL CONSULTATION
Your first chiropractic appointment, or your initial consultation, will typically last about 45 minutes and include a review of your history and symptoms, a complete chiropractic exam, and a diagnostic study.
History and Symptoms
Before your initial consultation, you will complete forms detailing your symptoms, condition, and other background information. The forms will take about 45 minutes to one hour to complete and include questions such as:
- When did the pain start?
- Was there a specific incident that caused the onset of pain?
- Where does it hurt?
- What is the pain like – sharp, dull, throbbing, intermittent, constant, etc?
- What makes the pain better or worse?
- What do you do to deal with the pain?
The forms will also ask about your medical history, pre-existing conditions, and any previous or current treatments from other professionals.
Dr. McCourt will thoroughly review your paperwork and ask you questions to understand your specific situation and needs.
Chiropractic Exam
After reviewing your background information and symptoms, Dr. McCourt will perform a chiropractic exam. The exam includes tests to determine range of motion, muscle tone and strength, and neurological integrity. He will use static and motion palpation techniques to find areas that have restricted movement or that are fixated. He will also perform a posture analysis and assess specific areas with pain.
Diagnostic Study
As needed, Dr. McCourt will do a diagnostic study to determine any structural abnormalities that may be contributing to your current condition. The most common diagnostic study is the x-ray which is used to locate subluxations, or areas where the vertebra have an altered position. In cases where soft tissue damage may be the cause of your condition, such as nerve compression, a torn muscle, or issues with discs, an MRI may be recommended.

Diagnosis
Based on the results of your examination and diagnostic study, and the information from your history and symptoms, Dr. McCourt will provide you with a specific diagnosis. Your diagnosis will also include an individualized chiropractic treatment plan and the anticipated length of your chiropractic care.
